Our Mission

The mission of Open Hearts Ministries is to Reach Out To Those In Need by providing affordable housing, healthy meals, a dry goods Sharing Table, toiletry kit distribution, meals for the elderly, delivery of meals to Shut-ins, volunteer opportunities regardless of cognitive ability and a safe environment in which to socialize. These programs help provide basic necessities, social interaction for everyone, and help individuals gain confidence and establish a foundation for stable citizenry.

Our signature program is a free 3-course hot meal served each Sunday afternoon at First Baptist Church on Main Street in Haverhill. We also prepare lunches 3 days per week and distribute those at various locations within the city. We also assist with accessing agency services.

Our History

Open Hearts Ministries began in October of 1997 with hot soup, sandwiches and coffee served to the poor and hungry in Haverhill, MA. Tables were set up outside in GAR Park in the center of the city and food distribution continued to grow. A year later, First Baptist Church of Haverhill (FBC) recognized the overwhelming need for this ministry and invited OHM into their facility to use their commercial kitchen and dining hall. The community meals have been cooked and served on the premises ever since.

In 2007, OHM incorporated due to its continued growth. First Baptist provides Open Hearts office space, administrative infrastructure, and program space in which to hold structured workshops and training. With this new space, and due to increasing need for basic necessities among our clients, OHM began to provide gently used clothing and personal care items available for distribution. OHM continues to grow and expand services to support the vulnerable individuals and families in the City of Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley.
